International Association for Online Learning, publishes Standards for Quality Online Teaching
The Participate module has provided me with an opportunity to become more informed about the roles and responsibilities of an online teacher. The International Association for Online Learning published the Standards for Quality Online Teaching. Below I will provide evidence how the information and/or activities in this module allows me to meet these standards.
Standard C: The online teacher plans,
designs, and incorporates strategies to encourage active learning, application,
interaction, participation, and collaboration in the online environment.
An online teacher must be well versed on how to utilize effective online teaching strategies and where to locate reputable digital resources. The lessons covering character traits of a good digital citizen and collecting reputable resources has given me a toolkit of strategies and web resources to make me a better online teacher. I will definitely use the tools and resources I found on my web walkabout.
Standard E: The online
teacher models, guides, and encourages legal, ethical, and safe behavior
related to technology use.
The "Plan for Protecting the Digital Rights and Responsibilities within a DLC" lesson exposed me to information about intellectual property, copyrights, and Fair Use. The plan I created for this lesson will assist me in conveying the seriousness of protecting each member's digital rights and responsibilities. The collaborative creation of roles, responsibilities, and expectations will make each member feel as if his or her voice was heard and they have a personal stake in the success of the DLC.
Standard J: The online
teacher interacts in a professional, effective manner with colleagues, parents,
and other members of the community to support students’ success.
Teachers should also be mindful of the way they interact with others, whether it is with colleagues, parents or other members of the DLC. The lesson on netiquette provided me with the opportunity to create my own digital list of do's and don'ts for behavior in a DLC. Professional behavior for teachers always brings up a memory from my very first faculty meeting over teacher communication. The principal stated a teacher should never say, email, text, etc. anything they would be ashamed to find on the front page of the local newspaper.
My takeaways from the Participate module includes collaboratively creating a set of norms for all stakeholders in the DLC, utilization of my list of tools and resources online, and my plan for ethical and safe behavior online.
I found the lesson over digital rights and responsibilities fascinating. I knew only a little regarding intellectual property, copyrights, and Fair Use. The video explaining what is or is not a violation was very informative and made me think of things I had previously not acknowledged. I left the lesson with a plan to be more mindful of what I share (intentionally and unintentionally) and if it is legal for me to share information.
